Shahed Ahmed invited to join English Hubs Council

New Vision English Hub is delighted to announance that Shahed Ahmed, CEO of New Vision Trust has been invited to become a member of the English Hubs Council.

The English Hubs Council will have a vital role in providing strategic vision and direction for the English Hubs Programme, as well as support for its implementation. The Council will work alongside the Department for Education, the English Hubs Training Centre and the school-based English Hubs to maximise the impact of the programme.

Shahed Ahmed has been a strong advocate for the teaching of Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) for over a decade and has supported schools and the government to implement SSP locally and nationally. He was a member of the Department for Education Phonics Advisory Committee which led to the introduction of the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. In 2012, when the Mayor of Newham launched the Newham Reading Guarantee, Shahed supported Headteachers throughout the borough in improving the teaching of phonics by helping them to introduce a structured phonics programme.

Shahed has also promoted a love of reading and vocabulary development at Elmhurst Primary School. He has ensured that teachers give time to reading aloud to children, so that they can enjoy hearing stories that they might not yet be able to access independently. He has invested in our school library so that children have access to texts that will tempt them.

Shahed said, "I am very pleased to be invited onto the English Hubs Council. I look forward to using my experience to support and guide the English Hubs programme so that it successfully helps to improve the teaching and learning of reading throughout the country."
